James Spencer & Co Ltd – A leading and renowned manufacturer of quality healthcare furniture and equipment, proudly serving the UK care homes sector for more than 60 years.

James Spencer & Co Ltd continues to build on its excellent reputation as one of the country’s foremost manufacturers of quality healthcare furniture and equipment – supplied on time and at the right price to the UK care homes sector.

Their products portfolio is all-encompassing, including modern ranges of chairs, recliners, tables, suites, leg rests, commodes and toilet aids, portering chairs, walking aids and wheelchairs, high seat chairs, beds and bed accessories, general ward equipment and office furniture, cabinets and trolleys, bath and shower equipment, and daily living and mobility aids. The choice of fabrics throughout is extensive.

Over the past 12 months, James Spencer has been concentrating efforts on improving key areas of its operation, including increasing manufacturing capacity, introducing new technologies and enhancing product ranges, notably in specialist areas of the business.

At the same time, it has always been a ‘green’ company - recycling wherever and whenever possible, a major consideration for environmentally aware customers.

James Spencer continues to offer:

? Integrity – it is a dependable family company established for more than six decades.
? Reliability – it delivers on its promises.
? Competitive Pricing – it offers the best value against comparable quality.
? Quality/Safety – it not only conforms to, but also surpasses recognised industry standards.
? Customer Service – it prides itself on being second to none.

The company began life in Headingley, Leeds, in 1948, acquiring its present premises in Wilsden, Bradford, West Yorkshire, in 1982. By 1995, the company had transferred its entire operation to Wilsden, from where it now manufactures over half of its products.

James Spencer employs a near 40-strong and highly skilled workforce, some of whom have worked for the company for more than 25 years. All undertake ongoing training to ensure the firm remains at the cutting edge of the industry sector.

Over the years, James Spencer has grown and diversified to become one of the UK’s leading companies in the design, manufacture and sales of specialist healthcare furniture and equipment, though it remains an independent, family-owned 2nd generation business.

The company holds BS EN ISO 9001 quality accreditation, meets all the latest health and safety regulations and undertakes deliveries using its own vans. It also has its own show van, which is used to showcase individual products required by customers. The show van can be booked by appointment for personal visits, in effect a mobile shop window that takes products direct to the customer’s doorstep – right across the UK.

Specialist furniture and equipment is one of James Spencer’s key strengths. For example, a challenging environments catalogue has now been produced for the first time.

Chairman Richard Spencer explained: “For many years, we have worked with – and listened to - professionals specialising in the care of people with mental health and challenging behavioural problems, as we do with all our customers concerning all our product ranges.

“We have now trialed, tested and introduced improved furniture products designed to be conducive to the well-being of such end users. While they retain the appearance of conventional furniture used in a normal day-to-day living environment, the vast majority are very heavy and robustly built to minimise damage from potential abuse.

“Security and safety are high priorities, with concealed staples, no piping, non-retractable (tamper-proof) screws and no areas for concealment all being taken into account. The range is also manufactured using materials which can’t be used to harm self or others. A wide selection of modern, easy-clean fabrics is also offered.”

The new challenging environments catalogue has been published at the same time as the company’s updated Forward Thinking Furniture (FTF) catalogue. James Spencer is further promoting FTF following extensive field trials, which have improved the range of robust, eco-friendly furniture.

The FTF range of chairs, settees, beds and dining sets is thought to be unique to the industry sector, as the frames are made totally from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic – yet more evidence of James Spencer’s commitment to protecting the environment,

Both the challenging environments and FTF publications add to the expanding stable of specialist standalone catalogues now being produced by the company. Others in place cover the back care, bariatric, suites and wardchairs, and housing association sectors.

Along with James Spencer’s all-encompassing 162-page 2009 catalogue - described as the biggest and best to date - all are available in print. They can also be viewed in a virtual eco-friendly format at the company’s website at www.jamesspencer.co.uk or downloaded in product categories, or as a whole.

In addition, James Spencer’s full product ranges are also on view at the company’s newly extended showroom at Prospect Mills.

The 3,000 sq ft showroom, double the size of the previous display area, represents a major investment for the firm and contains several specific zones showcasing all furniture and equipment ranges, along with accessories.

Richard Spencer explains: “Bulk purchasing and economies of scale have reduced our manufacturing costs, allowing the company to pass these financial savings directly onto our customers.

“Now, everyone can benefit from a modern, continually expanding product range from a busy and expanding company. We work in partnership with our customers, who have helped us develop products, which have, in turn, helped countless people in their day-to-day lives. It gives us immense satisfaction to know we are making a real contribution to the health, welfare and care of our end-users.”

In short, something for everyone and all available at the right price – direct from the manufacturer via the sales team, the stable of catalogues, website or the new showroom.
