What is a SensorCare System?
How does it work?
SensorCare provide an
unobtrusive falls prevention monitor for the vulnerable that
has been clinically proven to assist in the reduction of falls.
Falls are a leading cause of
injury and sometimes death in the elderly population of the UK.
Many patients in care are in need of constant vigilance to
ensure their safety.
The problem of patient falls in
care is growing, particularly in elderly care and mental health.
Being able to prevent falls can ensure that patients are kept
both physically and mentally healthy for longer periods of time.
SensorCare’s bed and chair
sensors are used in hospitals, care homes and domiciliary care
to allow carers the freedom to carry out their daily tasks
whilst keeping a constant vigil on patients at risk of a fall.
The anti-microbial covered
stainless steel bed and chair sensors are placed under a
patient’s mattress or chair cushion offering a discreet
unobtrusive solution to patient care. The sensors detect a
change of pressure when a patient vacates the bed or chair. The
system audibly alerts the carer through a pager system that
assistance is needed at the patient’s bedside, prior to a fall
from happening. This method of monitoring is discreet and
therefore allows the patient to retain their dignity and
independence. The carer using this system is allowed the freedom
to continue with their daily tasks whilst still providing the
highest and most vigilant level of care.
Bed and chair
monitors can also be used as an excellent monitoring application
in situations where high risk patients are prone to wandering.
They are highly effective for use in dementia care where
patients can forget they are unable to mobilise without
assistance.
The use of a
paging system alongside bed and chair sensors can provide
further independence. Pagers which link exclusively to the
sensors can be carried by carers, who are then able to move
around the ward freely and still be alerted to patient
mobilisation. It is then possible to reduce the volume of the
alarm at the patient’s bedside so as not to disturb others in
the vicinity.
The system
consists of two components, a control unit and a pressure
sensing panel. Set up and operation is simple and there is no
risk of electric shock as the control unit is battery powered.
The pressure sensing panels are encased in polyurethane covers
which have been impregnated with an anti-microbial silver
treatment which prevents the risk of cross infection between
patients. As the sensors are placed under the mattress or chair
cushion, they act as a discreet monitor, retaining the patient’s
dignity whilst assuring patient safety.
The sensors
are plugged into a control unit which measures the pressure of
the patient in the bed or chair; this is placed out of reach at
the end of the bed or the side of the chair. The control unit
will alarm if the patient rises, but also has the option for the
volume to be turned right down. This is useful when used
alongside the paging system or if interfaced into a nurse call
system. Sensors can be used on any type of mattress or on any
bed and also under any type of chair cushion. The systems are
pre-calibrated for a variation in weight, agility and different
bed types and should not require adjustment in normal use.
Systems also have a simple adjustment to make them more or less
sensitive if required.
